Looking due west along the Transverse Ranges. The San Bernardinos in the foreground, with the San Gabriels beyond. They're "transverse" because very few mountain ranges in the U.S. run east-west.

These mountains are pushed up from a "kink" in the divide between the Pacific and North American tectonic plates.
